Southern Living's editorial guidelines Published on July 19, 2024 06:00AM EDT Photo: Southern Living / Madison Woiten Southern summers have plenty going for them. There are the cookouts, lake days, and abundant sunshine, but there’s also the blistering heat. As someone who often finds herself waking up a little damp due to said nighttime temperatures, I’ve taken all the usual steps: switched my sheets, chosen a lighter comforter, and picked up a pair of cooling pajamas. While they’ve all been effective, the problem lies in the fact that my AC unit just doesn’t cut it, and it needed some help. When I saw that Vornado’s vintage fan was uniquely designed to circulate cool air throughout an entire room, on top of being incredibly charming, I was sold. Vornado Vintage Floor Fan Wayfair Orig. $110 $100 at Wayfair The Vornado model uses a vortex of air, which the brand claims is faster-moving and further-reaching than the air from traditional oscillating fans. It bounces off the walls and ceiling to circulate more efficiently around an entire room, not just sections at a time. My fan sits on a corner table in my bedroom, angled toward my ceiling. When it’s not turned on, the air feels markedly less cool and even more stagnant (despite having a ceiling fan). In addition to its unique way of moving cool air, the fan also has varying noise levels, a huge perk since silent rooms make my brain run wild. When set on its highest level, the Vornado fan offers the perfect amount of white noise. However, for those who do like quieter models, the fan is pretty low-key on its medium and low settings. One of my favorite things about the fan isn’t its wind power or durability (though, I’ve had mine for seven months and even moved with it), it’s how cute it is. The retro design has bronze details on the nameplate and front grate, and the deep teal green looks great in my bedroom. Plus, it’s relatively compact—a little over a foot high and slightly under a foot wide with an 8-inch depth. Shoppers also love it, describing it as “sturdy” and “pack[ing] a punch.” Like me, one person says it’s the “perfect sound for sleeping, not to mention cooling down in this heat.” Take my word and invest in this functional, vintage-inspired fan, or keep scrolling to see even more fan options that’ll help keep you cool in the summer heat.
