The legendary gymnast’s high-flying floor routine clinched gold for Team USA in the team final and brought her Olympic medal tally up to eight—five of them gold. Biles was previously tied with 1996 Atlanta Games star Shannon Miller at seven Olympic medals. "I love what this team did and by Simone getting that eighth medal, she's just inspiring so many young people, but also, all of us to go after our goals and to just build big goals," Miller, 47, said in an interview with CNN. And Biles was just getting started. On Thursday she dominated the individual all-around final, earning her ninth Olympic medal and sixth gold. Biles, who turned 27 in March, now has 39 combined world championship and Olympic medals. The most decorated gymnast in history, Biles previously told USA Today that she doesn’t keep count of her medals. "Honestly, I would’ve had to Google that, I’m not really sure, I don’t keep count, I don’t keep stats," Biles said of her impressive collection. "I just go out here and do what I love. It’s amazing now that I hear it, but I don’t think I’ll truly understand the depth of it until I walk away from the sport." Biles’ impact on the sport of gymnastics goes way beyond medals. A total of five elements are currently named after her: two on vault, two on floor exercise, and one on balance beam. At 27, Biles is the oldest American woman to win an Olympic medal in gymnastics in 76 years. She is also the oldest to compete since 1952. Go Simone, go! Was this page helpful?
