Sometimes it’s the simple things that are the most genius. Instead of tucking a slice of cheese into a biscuit (which never seems to melt in time), slather on this mixture of softened butter and grated Cheddar that melts beautifully into all the cracks and cravesses of a warm biscuit. Plus, this compound butter has just the right amount of salty, savory and luscious flavor with just a slight tang from the cheese. If there was ever a reason to splurge on fancier European-style butter, this would be the time, since you’ll really be able to taste the difference in this recipe. Feel free to get creative and mix in your favorite spice blends instead of our suggested mix, play around with the kind of cheese you use, or fold in fresh herbs.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup extra-sharp Cheddar cheese, grated (about 1 cup)

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature

  • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt

  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper

Directions

  1. Stir cheese, butter, salt, and pepper in a small bowl until combined. Serve at room temperature. Store in an airtight container in refrigerator for up to 1 week. Let come to room temperature before serving.
