The first-time Olympian shot a 62 in the final round with no bogeys to best Great Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama in the men's individual stroke play golf tournament at Le Golf National on Sunday. Cameras rolled as Scheffler, 28, tried and failed to hide his tears as the U.S. national anthem began to play. By the end he was sobbing openly. The University of Texas grad discussed the now-viral moment in a post-medal interview with NBC’s Mike Tirico, revealing that he’s often moved to tears after a win. “Well I get emotional in general,” Scheffler explained. “I usually have a bit more time after a tournament to kind of reflect and have a couple of moments to myself. But with this one you kind of just go from one thing to the next and you don't really reflect until you're standing up there on the podium.” “And, I mean, I got emotional the other night at the women's gymnastics, just sitting there watching the gold medal ceremony just thinking about our country,” he continued. “So that was a pretty special moment that I'll remember for a long time. You know, standing up there on the podium with the gold medal around my neck.” An Olympic gold medal is the cherry on top of a year to which perhaps only Tiger Woods could relate. Scheffler won the Masters for the second time in his career earlier, nabbed six wins on the PGA Tour, and welcomed his first child. His wife Meredith was in attendance Sunday with their three-month-old son Bennett in her arms. Congratulations, Scottie! Was this page helpful? Thanks for your feedback! Tell us why! Other Submit
