Just like in any other facet of life, nail trends come and go. What was popular a few years ago—or even decades ago—might come back around at any moment. The pinks and purples of the 1980s have seen their own resurgence, as well as the crisp French tips of the early 2000s. However, as we head into autumn, the biggest nail trend is all about going back to your roots with a “your nails but better” manicure.

The "Your Nails But Better” Trend

Last year, bright colors and intricate designs were easily the most popular nail choices, but now it seems that the law of opposites has come to switch things up. Instead, people are opting for a much more subtle look that is flattering on all, known most commonly as “natural nails” or “sheer nails.” While the beginning of the year was still enamored with pearl nails—which our grandmothers have been doing forever—and creamy white nails, we’ve seen a gradual transition that strips back those neutral options even more.

Barely-there neutrals and sheer whites are what everyone seems to be asking for, stemming from the current fashion obsession surrounding everything classic and simple. Basically, this nail trend is like a dependable white button-down that will never go out of style and goes with everything. It transcends occasion and age demographic effortlessly, which is always a bonus when spending time and money at the nail salon. Including tip!

How To Achieve The Look

To try the barely-there nail trend, opt for a sheer nude shade, such as Dior Nail Glow or Essie Mademoiselle. You can also choose a milky white color, such as OPI Funny Bunny and ask for just one coat. You can even leave your nail totally bare, instead going for just a shiny topcoat.

Embracing the “your nails but better” look is akin to letting your natural skin peek through your makeup or sweeping your air-dried hair into a French twist. It's elegant and understated, and it can offer an instant dose of confidence in your own natural beauty. While the trend is perfect for all seasons, we're looking forward to a neutral autumn when we’re too busy prioritizing fall activities with loved ones to pick out a loud nail color.

Luckily, barely-there shades wear off gracefully in between salon visits, so there's no need to stress about your next appointment.
