Back stateside, America's original gymnastics hero is celebrating a very different kind of achievement: became a grandmother. People confirmed that Mary Lou Retton’s daughter, Skyla, 24, recently welcomed her first baby, a girl. The pregnancy was first made public back in May when older sister Shayla shared a family photo on Instagram that put Skyla’s baby bump on full display. "I'm going to be a LouLou," Retton told People at the time while hinting at her chosen nickname. "I don't want to be a Mimi, a Gigi, or a Nana. A LouLou!" Retton, who is still recovering from a rare case of pneumonia that left her hospitalized last year, told the publication that she couldn’t wait to be a doting grandmother. "I'm just going to be spoiling the heck out of them," she said. "Which I did not do to my kids! So I'll spoil them, and when they come over I'll just play with them, hide and seek, all of it. It's going to be LouLou's time!" Retton became the first American to win an individual all-around gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The former gymnast, who has lived in Texas since the 80s, shares daughters Shayla, McKenna, Skyla, and Emma with her ex-husband, retired Texas Longhorns quarterback Shannon Kelley. In a recent health update, Retton, who relies on daily oxygen, told People that she believes she survived her pneumonia battle because “God wasn’t ready for me yet." But it’s been a long recovery and she said she will "never be the same." “It’s been really hard,” Retton admitted. “My lungs are so scarred. It will be a lifetime of recovery. My physicality was the only thing I had and it was taken away from me.” Was this page helpful? Thanks for your feedback! Tell us why! Other Submit
