Stray Dog With “Terrible And Painful Matting” Gets Haircut And New Home With Disabled Veteran

When Wylar was picked up as a stray in Tampa, Florida, earlier this month, the small white dog’s fur was so matted that he was in terrible pain. 

Even though he was uncomfortable, Wylar still “craved attention and affection” from humans. According to a Humane Society of Tampa Bay (HSTB) Facebook post, he immediately crawled into the laps of their staff.

Despite his friendliness, Wylar’s condition indicated a very sad past. 

“Based on his teeth, we are estimating Wylar is about 1.5 years old,” Regan Blessinger, a spokesperson for the humane society told McClatchy News. “Matting like that does not happen quickly so either he was a stray for a very long time, or not being properly cared for in a home.” 

The matting situation was so bad that staff at HSTB had to sedate him in order to shave him. But as soon as the fur was gone, Wylar was a different dog. With a fresh haircut, he became available for adoption. 

Almost immediately, a disabled Air Force veteran named Joe saw Wylar on the rescue’s website. An “avid adopter from HSTB,” Joe told the staff he was interested in having a smaller dog as a companion. 

“Wylar wasted no time crawling right into Joe’s lap during the meet and greet and from that moment he knew,” Blessinger told McClatchy News.
