From leaving your phone on the table at meals to placing someone on speaker phone in public, there are many cell-related etiquette dilemmas to consider, including group texts. While group texts are a very convenient way to stay in touch with your family members, friend group, fellow Hallmark movie lovers, book club pals, or any other social group, certain inherent etiquette issues arise—such as, what if you want to leave a group chat? Moreover, is it rude to leave a group text without any explanation? How To Leave a Group Text Getty Images/Xavier Lorenzo In short, yes it might be considered rude to leave a group text without saying anything or giving explanation to other group members. However, there are ways to leave a group chat that are more appropriate for the specific situation, depending on how many people are in the group text, how close you are with them, and the intent of the group text. Remember: Etiquette is all about being mindful of other people, and that is exactly the goal here. Overall, think of leaving a group text politely like leaving a party politely, which often depends most on the size of attendees. How To Leave a Small Group Text Ideally, group texts would be between 4 and 6 people to ensure it does not get too overwhelming or flush with constant messages. Yet, it does make it more apparent when someone leaves a group text when it is not very large to begin with. If the purpose of the group text was for a specific event that has now occurred or a topic that has been resolved, it should not be a huge deal to gracefully bow out. Consider sending a quick text—such as “Hi, cleaning out my messages to get a bit more organized, but feel free to send me a text separately anytime if you need anything!”—to get ahead of any misgivings. It’s also perfectly okay to text or have an in-person conversation with the host and request that they start a new chain without you. How To Leave a Large Group Text The perfect example of how large group texts can be overwhelming is if you imagine a big party. When too many voices are in the room, it can get loud and overbearing. The same is true for a group text thread, especially when it is a collection of people of varying personalities, communication styles, and preferences. So, for whatever reason, if you’ve been added to a group text chain that you’d rather not be part of—perhaps you even enjoyed it at first and find you simply can’t keep up—don’t feel the need to draft a long public statement. Bow out gracefully, and text anyone important to you or the host separately if desired. More Group Text Etiquette Regardless of whether you plan to stay in the group text or simply make it pleasant enough that others do not want to leave, make sure to stick to the basics of being a polite communicator, knowing that group text messages can be overwhelming to some. Our ultimate tip? Stick to people you know, post things meant for everyone, watch time zones, mute your device, and stay on subject. If wanting to leave a group text, always feel free to exit the chat and privately text the host or your friends a short, kind note saying that it is not personal, but you prefer one-on-one text conversations.
