The Austin native famously rescued a puppy from The Labelle Foundation while filming the "standalone sequel" to the 1996 classic Twister in Oklahoma. "I was going through a breakup at the time and was in the middle of Enid, Oklahoma, and I had always wanted a dog," Powell, 35, recently told Entertainment Weekly. "It was something I thought about a lot, but it was somewhere in this coffee shop in Enid.... I don't even know how to describe it, I just had the desire to be a father." Powell said he was scrolling through social media one day when he came across the perfect pup. He sent the Los Angeles-based rescue a “heartbreakingly depressing” video of himself explaining why he “needed” this dog. It worked. Powell took a weekend off from filming to pick up the small white-and-tan pup. Despite being an “Oklahoma boy,” Powell gave the dog a decidedly Texas name. "I almost named Brisket 'Enid,' because when I was in the town of Enid is where I really felt like I wanted to be a dog dad," Powell told The Oklahoman. "He's really an Oklahoma boy at the end of the day." Powell, who recently relocated from Los Angeles to the Austin area at the advice of Matthew McConaughey, told the publication that his dog's name “in no way” means that he prefers Oklahoma brisket to Texas barbecue. "I didn't eat a lot of barbecue here," he said. "I ate a lot of good steak, though." Twisters hits theaters on July 19. Was this page helpful? Thanks for your feedback! Tell us why! Other Submit
