Best Easter Host Gifts

Southern Living / Brian Kopinski

Pastel dresses filling church pews, delicate daffodils and paperwhite narcissus peeking out of their winter beds, and Peeps lining the candy aisles are all sure signs spring has sprung in the South.

When you get that invitation to celebrate Easter with family and friends, as Southerners, we know a token of gratitude is in order. It doesn't have to be expensive or big, but it should be thoughtful and reflect your relationship with the host. So before you load up the Tupperware, don your Sunday finest, and grab your basket, take a moment to find a gift that shows how much you appreciate the invite.

For insight, we turned to Elisabeth Hanes, co-founder of Provision in Fairhope, Alabama. Hanes’ rule of thumb is to give what you would like to be given, and whether big or small, always make it personal. She added, “We live near Mobile Bay, so when I’m giving a (host) gift I’m always thinking of how to give something true to place.” She loves to gift oyster knives, her homemade crab boil in mini weck jars, a cheese board from Provision to enjoy the sunset and happy hour on the bay, and her staple: a Commonwealth Provisions Citronella + Lavender candle, which can always be found burning on her porch.

To come up with our list of the best gifts for Easter hosts, we spent hours researching products and considered factors like budget, occasion, and the range of gifts available from practical to indulgent. In addition to Hanes, we also received expert insight on the etiquette surrounding gifts for couples from Diane Gottsman, national etiquette expert and founder of The Protocol School of Texas.

We heralded the triumphant return of table games and these playing cards make the perfect gift to tuck into an adult Easter basket. The Garden Party floral design reminds us of all the spring blooms we anxiously await in our gardens. The deck includes 52 cards with full-color illustrations and additional decoration on face cards. This beautiful set can seed a new tradition of getting friends together for a round of Rummy to close out your Easter celebration.

While the kids are dying eggs, you can feast on these indulgent Easter treats. Yes, even adults like some candy on Easter morning. This European-inspired, handcrafted paper mâché egg is filled with a milk chocolate bunny, fluffy marshmallows, fruity gummies, chewy taffy, and a chocolate-covered cookie. When all the sweets are gone, the vintage tin made in Germany becomes a colorful keepsake.

We love an elegant cake stand, and this cute design offers a lovely canvas for a layer cake, some Easter cupcakes, a collection of decorated eggs, or some holiday candy. A white ceramic topsy-turvy bunny balances the 8.3-inch serving platter atop his paws. The handcrafted platter should be hand-washed to ensure its appearance on many Easter tablescapes to come.

Gottsman thinks a potted plant is a thoughtful gift for an Easter host, but a living plant requires maintenance that this pretty pink potted dianthus with Courtly Check accents never will. The 8-inch terracotta pot has just the right amount of wear while the polyester faux blooms make any space pop. And Southerners love MacKenzie-Childs, the brand known for making heirloom pieces destined to be passed down for generations.

This floral mini cocotte available in an array of pastel hues will continue giving them use well into the spring. You can even bring it filled with a batch of Easter Bunny Chow for something extra festive.

A perfect addition to any Easter tablescape, these bunny accent plates are crafted from durable stoneware and feature a sweet bunny crowned with spring flowers. They are dishwasher and microwave safe, and the 8-inch size makes them perfect for a heaping portion of skillet-roasted carrots or a slice of classic cheesecake. And when the holiday is over, these sturdy plates make lovely decor that will become heirlooms as the years pass.

As we noted in our guide to the best gifts for hosts, a tin of salve helps ease the toll hours spent prepping food, cleaning the house, and setting up for a dinner party take on a host's hands. The intense moisturizer comes with a light, calming scent that leaves hard-working hands soft.

Each certified organic batch is crafted from a blend of pure beeswax, vitamin E, and olive oil. The original spearmint scent is lovely, but the salve also comes in cedar, rosemary, and lavender scents. Your host will appreciate this self-care gift, especially after a heavy round of Easter dishes.

Old-fashioned letter writing and thank you cards penned by hand still figure strongly in Southern sensibilities. Gottsman believes nothing is more personal than a handwritten card, no matter the occasion, and we agree. If you’re struggling over the message in your thank you card, we have this advice.

This set of personalized stationery by graphic designers Robert and Stella from Salt Lake City features friendly blush daisies on velvety cotton, heavy-weight paper. Minted also offers free recipient addressing.

Practical gifts are always a good option and when they can bring in a little luxury, even better. This 24-ounce dish soap combines a blend of tart lemon, bright orange, and zesty lemongrass which is infused with Italian verbena, cedarwood, and fir. It’s a luxe sensory experience for any kitchen and maybe makes washing dishes a little less onerous. It’s plant-based and biodegradable, so not only is it easy on your hands, but easy on the planet as well.

A Southern garden would not be complete without a healthy dose of hydrangeas, and an Easter table would not be complete without an homage to the celebrated flower. This 16-inch placemat brings the hydrangea to your table with its blue linen fabric and white thread accents. Whether your host is leaning into a garden party theme or a pastel tablescape, these will be a welcome addition to their decor.

Southerners love Peeps in their Easter basket and these cute bunny soaps look just like them. The set of four handmade glycerin soaps comes in a pastel rainbow and smells just like jelly beans. Pair these with a decorative tray or tuck them into your host’s Easter basket for a sugar-free, adorable gift.

The whimsical Easter dish soap set features a 4.75-inch stoneware dish in the shape of a bunny face with one ear flopping and a 3.75-inch bar of lavender hand soap wrapped in brown craft paper that features another bunny face. To complete the lovely packaging, it is all wrapped with twine for a rustic, natural look. When your host finishes with the soap the tray can double as a jewelry storage spot or an office organizer for paper and binder clips.

Hosts can never get enough serving trays, and we love everything MacKenzie-Childs. This 12-inch tray is crafted from lavender metal with delicate scalloped edges. The interior is a scene of colorful butterflies and bees flitting over black and white flowers. Pile the tray up with your favorite cookies or brownies as a special treat.

Hanes loves putting together adult Easter baskets, especially for her twin sister who she doesn’t see often enough. When she builds one, these caramels are always included. The 5-ounce box includes 12 individually wrapped caramels crafted from caramelized cane sugar and rich duck fat, made in Nashville.

Le Creuset, known for its durable bakeware, is a Southern staple. Any piece from the collection would be a welcome gift, but for somebody who entertains, the Olive Branch Heritage Rectangular Casserole baking dish offers an elegant and versatile vessel for pans of pineapple casserole, comforting macaroni and cheese with ham, peach bread pudding, and more.

Gottsman added, “Adults love Easter, and bringing a pan of unbaked cinnamon rolls to pop in the oven the next day is a welcome and heartfelt Easter treat.”

In Highlands, North Carolina, they are crafting handmade, 100% beeswax candles cast from tree cuttings, and Hanes loves them. “They look beautiful on any tablescape. For Easter, I love to give a variety of springy colors. Easter is the introduction to spring when all things are in bloom and with pastel Stick Candles you get the beauty of spring without the pollen.”

This marmalade is among Gottsman’s favorites to gift, especially wrapped with a beautiful ribbon. Floral Meyer lemon rinds and amber honey combine to make the perfect spread for toast, bagels, muffins, or just on a cracker with a cup of tea. It comes in 5- or 10-ounce jars and also makes a mean glaze for chicken, pork, and fish. Your Easter host will appreciate this versatile spread.

We love fresh oysters here in the South—we even have trails dedicated to them—and an oyster-shucking knife is one of Hanes’ go-to gifts. This set, crafted in Charleston, South Carolina, includes a Put 'Em Back Oyster Knife which has a bent tip design for comfort and is made from recycled plastic bottles.

It also includes the Professional Edition Oyster Knife, designed to open thicker-shelled oysters and heavy use. And we all know when shucking oysters safety is paramount, so the Cut Proof Shucking Cloth keeps your hands and fingers safe as you shuck your way through a couple dozen or host an old-fashioned oyster roast.

This succulent bunny arrives fully planted and ready to display, and even if they lack a green thumb, they’ll have no problem keeping this easy-to-care-for arrangement alive. The bunny planter will make a great addition to your hosts’ Easter tablescape or spring mantelpiece.

According to Hanes, you can never go wrong with a great bottle of wine. Better than that is a subscription to sample a bunch of great bottles of wine. And at Naked Wines, it all starts with a quiz, because who doesn’t love a quiz? It’s only three minutes and helps customize your case. Each bottle comes from an independent winemaker and you can purchase a voucher for your Easter host to cash in on what they like.

An elegant bauble to adorn your hosts’ wrist makes a thoughtful Easter gift. This bracelet features a delicate gold-plated cross that is effortlessly classic. The stretch style makes taking it on and off a breeze.

Southerners love layer cakes and Caroline's Cakes, a Spartanburg, South Carolina-based company, is known for its seven-layer caramel cakes. They were originally baked by Caroline Ragsdale Reutter in the 1980s. Caroline’s Cakes ships nationwide, and this pink Champagne stunner will be a showstopper on any Easter table. The four layers are filled with rosé-colored buttercream and to complete the look, pair it with the La Jolie Muse cake stand for peak Easter vibes.

Relaxing over a cup of tea is a time-honored tradition in the South and this hand-blended trio by Oliver Pluff & Co. in Charleston, South Carolina, includes three healing tea blends that come from herbal recipes commonly used during the 18th century.

Your Easter host will appreciate cozying up with a cup of chamomile, lavender, or lemon balm tea included in this collection. Each tin contains 20 tea sachets, as well as detailed instructions on steeping.

Made in small batches with European-style craftsmanship, this Easter collection includes 18 speckled egg truffles covered in candy exteriors and filled with silky chocolate ganache inside. The whimsical set features six yellow eggs with dark chocolate ganache and passionfruit inside, six pink eggs with dark chocolate ganache inside, and six blue eggs with white chocolate coconut ganache inside.

Crafted from single-origin milk and dark chocolate, these sweet treats come nestled in a classic paper egg where you could tuck in an inspirational Easter quote about hope or new beginnings your host will appreciate.

Bunnies aren't the only ones who love cabbage leaves. This hand-painted, 16-inch cabbage-shaped platter is the perfect vehicle for cookies, like these tasty birds nest cookies, that your host can put out or stash away to enjoy after the party is over. Gottsman suggests picking up a dozen cookies from a local bakery if you don’t have time to bake and this dishwasher- and microwave-safe platter serves as a lovely canvas for delivery.

This Austin, Texas-based artisan chocolate company is an editor favorite for its creative flavor combinations and stunning designs. The Chocolatier’s family tradition of gifting white chocolate bunnies on Easter inspired the white chocolate truffles in this collection, along with marshmallow dark chocolate truffles and crunchy peanut butter truffles.

Handpoured in Fredericksburg, Virginia, these are another of Hanes’ favorites to gift. The citronella known to keep mosquitoes at bay when sitting outside is blended with the relaxing aroma of lavender. Each 14-ounce, 100% soy wax candle burns for a whopping 60 hours, allowing your host lots of bug-free time outside. It also comes in an attractive steel paint can that makes it look as good as it smells.

This sweet set comes in Easter-approved colors like perracotta, sage, and marigold and offers the perfect solution if your host needs to whip up a couple of eggs for a last-minute guest or warm the syrup for their French toast casserole.

Crafted with a ceramic nonstick coating, the 8-inch fry pan and 1.75-quart sauce pan provide a sturdy vessel for small batches and unlike cast iron, they don't need to be seasoned before use. Plus they clean up easily as the natural nonstick layer means no messy sprays and minimal butter or oil is required for cooking when a grilled cheese is calling.

We all love the peppermint bark, and now Williams Sonoma has an Easter version. The 14-ounce vintage mint green and gold tin is filled with Peruvian dark chocolate bark topped with creamy white chocolate and then embellished with candy pearls, pastel nonpareils, and sparkling edible glitter. This holiday staple makes a magical addition to any Easter basket for sweet lovers of all ages.

Bring the party to Easter brunch with these celebration crackers. Each is filled with a festive surprise and features Caspari's paper designs, bows, and more. Caspari opened its first boutique Paris, but its flagship store is located Charlottesville, Virginia.

As we said in our guide for the best gifts for neighbors, a wreath is always a welcome addition to a host’s door. This wreath features a mix of quail brush twigs, lavender, wheat and natural moss, and a selection of dried spring blooms.

A twig nest filled with three hand-painted speckled ivory eggs provides the perfect bit of Easter inspiration, making this a welcoming gift for your host to display above a sideboard laden with Easter brunch. Because of the delicate nature of this wreath, it is best kept indoors.

Hand-blown by artisans in Poland, this collection of martini glasses is inspired by the maker’s grandmother, who hunted for colored glass at antique shops in small neighboring South Carolina towns. Southerners definitely understand the love of a good antique store and finding that perfect treasure.

When Easter happy hour hits, mix up a white chocolate martini to sip out of these 8.25-ounce stunners. They come in shades of smoke, blush, and rose, or you can elect to mix your six-piece set with all three.

A bottle of olive oil is always a thoughtful gift according to Gottsman, and this Mini Essentials set has everything a host needs for mixing up a tasty salad dressing or finishing a charcuterie board. The four petite bottles make a perfect thank-you gift.

The charming box includes 3.4-ounce bottles of Awake and Alive olive oils, as well as Rapture balsamic vinegar and Parasol Champagne vinegar. Pairing notes and farm information are included with each box, and the beautiful bottles can be reused or serve as decor after emptied.

Harry & David gift baskets are always welcome gifts. The stylish woven basket contains three Royal Riviera pears (one wrapped in pink foil), a bag of Moose Munch Premium Popcorn, chocolate-covered apricots, and their signature truffles in white coffee, dark cherry, dark raspberry, milk almond, dark chocolate, and milk chocolate. Joining the bounty is a classic milk chocolate bunny, marshmallow robin eggs, and yogurt-covered pretzels. A beautiful lavender hand-tied bow finishes the elegant Easter package.

Gottsman loves sliding some of these beautiful Meyer lemons into a cut glass pitcher for a tasty Easter treat for the host, but you could also order the whole box and wrap it in a beautiful bow.

Meyer lemons are a cross between a lemon and a mandarin orange. They don't have the typical acidic bite of a traditional lemon and their skin is the color of sunshine. Your Easter host is sure to appreciate this 5-pound bounty as they make a batch of Meyer lemon cheesecake bars and think of you.

Both Gottsman and Hanes cited linens as great gifts, and this Easter-themed tea towel fits the bill. Screen-printed with the phrase “Happy Easter" and a collection of bunnies hopping among spring blooms, this cotton towel has a loop for hanging or use it to line an Easter basket or even give your bread basket a little color.

If your host loves to cook with fresh herbs, but doesn’t have the space outdoors to grow them, this LED-powered indoor herb garden will gift plenty of herbs long after the holiday. This compact smart garden features built-in LED grow lights that turn on and off in a 16-hour cycle to mimic natural light.

We cited it as the best indoor garden kit for beginners in recent testing and loved how easy and hands-off it was to operate. It comes with three basil seed pods, but they can always buy more and other varieties later. In less than a month, your host will have their own indoor garden to seed pesto sauce and salad dressings.

These playful bunny place card holders add another touch that makes your table feel decorated, not just set. Handcrafted of aluminum and finished in a light antique nickel, they come in a set of four with two standing bunnies and two sitting bunnies. The set also includes 20 name cards and a gift box for storage.

Another of Hanes’ favorites when building an adult Easter basket, these Willet bourbon barrel-aged old-fashioned syrups are handcrafted by bartenders with real ingredients like gentian root, cinchona bark, freshly milled spiced, burnt golden cane sugar, and fresh orange peel.

Each half-ounce bottle (five in the set) makes one cocktail, just add bourbon or rye whiskey. This makes the perfect gift for your whiskey or bourbon-loving Easter host who likes to sit on the porch, sipping a cocktail.

Available in charcoal or white, this elegant, handmade spoon rest is handcrafted with real lace in Nashville. The sturdy stoneware makes a lovely addition to the stovetop, breakfast table, or afternoon tea setup. The lace is pressed into the stoneware before glazing, creating a delicate embossed pattern on each spoon rest, and at 4 by 4 inches, it doesn't take up too much room when the table is full of Easter goodies.

Questions And Answers

What is a traditional Easter gift?

When thoughts turn to Easter gifts, a basket often comes to mind. For Gottsman, a traditional Easter gift varies depending on the age of the receiver, but a basket filled with treats is standard.

She says, “For children, fill the basket with a few items that will entertain them, which can easily be found in the dollar bin of a big box store, or craft items which will amuse them, as well as delight them when they jump into the basket. If mom approves, chocolate bunnies, sugar cookies, and popcorn are all winners.”

For adults, she says, “a succulent, or any type of potted plant, makes a lovely host) gift, as well as an Easter gift for a friend. Homemade vanilla, beautifully adorned with colorful string or ribbon is a thoughtful gift, and anything with a personal monogram [all show you care].”

What should you bring to an Easter brunch?

Gottsman advised, “If you are famous for your ham and cheese sliders or your brunch casserole, offer to bring it to take some pressure off of the host. You can also bring deviled eggs, a charcuterie board, an assortment of olives and cheese on a decorative plate you leave behind for the host as a gift, or your beloved potato salad that everyone asks for, to add to the menu. The key is to ask the host for their preference and give them some options.”

Should you bring a hostess gift to a brunch?

We’ve all had those moments when an invitation to a holiday party or special occasion comes with the dictate to only bring yourself, but Southerners know not to show up empty-handed. We gathered some advice for when this situation arises and asked our etiquette expert Gottsman to weigh in as well.

“Anytime you are invited to someone’s home for a celebration, it’s a gracious gesture to bring a (host) gift. Don’t forget to include a gift tag with your name on it so the host will remember who gave them the gift after the lunch, dinner, or celebration is over,” says Gottsman.
