There are way too many dogs currently staying in the kennels at Dallas Animal Services (DAS). The animal shelter said it currently has 482 dogs sharing 300 kennels. “We only have two empty kennels left,” Mary Martin, assistant director at DAS, told the NBC affiliate in Dallas Fort Worth. “We anticipate receiving hundreds of dogs in the coming week as dogs are scared out of their yards by fireworks." That means they need to make some room very quickly and that means finding a lot of adopted homes for their biggest dogs as soon as possible. To inspire folks to help clear the shelter, DAS has come up with a plan: Give the people gift cards. To help make some room, the next 150 dogs, who are over 40 pounds, will be sent to their new homes with $150 Amazon gift cards. "This is our way of saying thank you for your support and commitment to these animals," Martin said. The offer is limited to bigger dogs, because of space issues. Bigger dogs take up more room and the shelter needs all the room it can get and a golden retriever takes up about as much room as six chihuahuas. While the shelter doesn’t specify what new pet owners should use their gift cards to buy, $150 would pay for plenty of dog food, enrichment toys, and a cute set of bowls for a new pup. To see the many adorable dogs that are up for adoption at DAS, head to their website. To ensure your pup doesn’t make a dash for it during the Fourth of July, the shelter recommends keeping them indoors as much as possible during the holiday. They also recommend making sure your pet is microchipped and wearing ID tags so they can be returned to their homes as soon as possible, if they do get scared and run. Was this page helpful?
