Carol Burnett has won a lot of awards. Over the course of her long career, the actor, comedian, and San Antonio native, has collected statues at the Emmy Awards, Golden Globes, Tony Awards, and Grammy Awards. She even received the Presidential Medal of Freedom thanks to President George W. Bush. Despite all those many accolades, her recent Emmy nomination did something entirely new—it made history.

At 91-years-old, Burnett earned an Emmy nomination for her role as a supporting actor in the Apple TV + series Palm Royale. That makes her the oldest female comedy acting Emmy nominee ever. The history-making nomination was well deserved. In the series, which is set in Palm Beach, Florida, Burnett plays Normal Dellacorte, a society matriarch who happens to be in a coma when her nephew (Josh Lucas) and his wife (Kristen Wiig) roll into town to care for her. The series also stars Ricky Martin, Laura Dern, and Allison Janney and, as The Hollywood Reporter noted, received 11 Emmy nominations total, including a nod for best comedy series.

While Burnett’s nomination is one for the books, she’s not the oldest person to ever be nominated. That honor goes to the legendary Dick Van Dyke, who earned a Daytime Emmy Award at 98 years old.

The nomination is just the latest feather in the cap of the Hollywood legend. To mark her 90th birthday, NBC aired a two-hour TV special, Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love. Burnett not only starred in the career-spanning retrospective, but also produced the series, which earned her yet another Emmy Award.

To see if Burnett wins her eighth Emmy, tune into the 76th Emmy Awards when they are broadcast live September 15 on ABC.
