Southern Living's editorial guidelines Published on February 24, 2023 06:30PM EST Photo: Dior Black mascara is a staple in all of our makeup bags, but hear me out. Blue mascara is one of the best happy accidents that I’ve ever made. It started with a free makeup sample. While restocking on my routine products at Sephora, I was given a free gift with my purchase: a travel sized Diorshow mascara. That little thing worked like a dream. My lashes had never looked better but as my tiny tube got closer and closer to the bottom of the barrel, I was hesitant to buy the real thing. It was more expensive than my usual go-to, and did I really need more makeup? A particularly trying day convinced me to bite the bullet. Having decided that I deserved a little reward, I stormed into the store with tunnel vision, hastily grabbed my prize in a sleek black tube, and checked out—in and out within five minutes. I quickly realized my mistake: Instead of buying a standard black mascara, in my hurry, I accidentally purchased bright blue. BUY IT: $29.50 from Dior Now, there was no way that I was letting this pricey present to myself go to waste, so blue mascara would have to do. Since then, I’ve gotten compliments every single time I wear it. Why Wear Blue Mascara When it comes to mascara, blue is not as shocking a difference as you would expect from black. It can be a subtle change that makes a big impact. If you’re looking to make your eyes stand out, blue mascara will do just the trick. As it turns out, supermodels like Coco Rocha and Cara DeLevingne have been in on this secret for a while now. Light eyes and dark ones alike are complemented by this shade. For blue or green eyes, blue will accentuate the color, making your eyes brighter than ever. Meanwhile, a blue mascara will provide a beautiful contrast for brown or hazel eyes, making them pop. Either way, that subtle blue adds just enough intrigue to your eyes that people won’t be able to help but look. How To Wear Blue Mascara While I can’t sing enough praises for this colorful kind of makeup, I recognize that it probably won’t be part of the everyday routine. Rather, blue mascara can be just the right touch needed to spice up your look for a special occasion. Especially if you’re wearing an all black or neutral outfit, a swipe of blue mascara will take your look from drab to daring. Amazon BUY IT: $7.55 on Amazon If you’re hesitant to dive right into bright blue lashes, you can take baby steps. Dior also makes a deep, almost navy shade available at Sephora. Additionally, L’Oreal’s blue mascara is available in the drugstore or on Amazon for under $10, or you can see if your go-to black mascara comes in a blue option too. To start small, apply a coat of your usual black mascara, add a layer of blue on top, and get ready to wrack in the compliments. Was this page helpful? Thanks for your feedback! Tell us why!
