You might say barbecue is a sport in Texas, and the kids and coaches who compete in state championships would agree.

"For those high school kids that don't play any other sport: This is their sport," one coach declares in the trailer for BBQ High.

A new series on Magnolia Network, BBQ High will give viewers a taste of what it's like to cook under pressure alongside hundreds of Texas high school teams manning grills in regional and state competitions.

A trailer for the upcoming series shows two of those teams fighting for their chance to win a ribbon and scholarship money. The high school seniors feed fires, rain spices over quartered chickens, spray down ribs, and serve up platters of steaming hot meat. And while they're doing it, they have a few things to say about barbecue.

"People in Texas are obsessed with barbecue," one teen says. Another adds, "It's our way of life."

The trailer also gives a glimpse of the stresses of slinging barbecue when so much is on the line—and yes, tempers do run hot when someone lets the fire go out.

BBQ High premieres on Chip and Joanna Gaines' network on August 18 at 1 p.m. with two back-to-back episodes. Episodes will air each Sunday and stream the same day on Max and Discovery+.

Eventually, we'll find out which of the high school seniors prevail by perfecting their ribs, brisket, and beans.

"It's overwhelming for me to figure out my future," one student declares. "But making really good food makes me happy." We couldn't agree more.
