No matter how many hours we spend getting ready, extra moisture in the air can ruin a perfectly good hair day. Luckily, Southern women know that the right products can combat frizz. “Clients with frizzy or unruly hair in humid climates can benefit from anti-humidity products,” says Brigit Page, a hair stylist at Oxana Salon in Nashville. “These products help control frizz by creating a barrier that shields hair from excess moisture, keeping the style smoother and easier to manage in high humidity.” To find the best anti-humidity products for every hair type, we researched and evaluated products based on their application type, size, and key ingredients. In addition to Page, we also spoke with Oxana stylist Ellen McDonough for expert advice. Plus, Southern Living editors share their holy grail products to keep frizz at bay. Brigit Page and Ellen McDonough are stylists at Oxana Salon in Nashville. Best for Fine Hair Oribe Impermeable Anti-Humidity Spray Amazon Buy on Amazon Buy on Nordstrom Buy on Sephora McDonough recommends this product for frizz-free results. Though it’s formulated to hold and extend styled hair, it leaves you with a flexible and touchable finish unlike traditional hair spray. The lightweight formula also protects against environmental damage and harmful UV rays. Oribe tested this product in Miami to make sure it lasts day and night in the most humid environments. This product is also favored by Southern Living senior editorial producer Ivy Odom. "I'm on day-long video shoots a lot, so I often have to use extra hair spray to make my styles last throughout multiple wardrobe changes," she explains. "I love this hair spray for when I'm shooting outside because it helps hold my curl even in the sweltering humidity.” It’s important to note that the price per ounce is one of the highest on our list. Odom notes that since the price tag is hefty, she saves it for days when she’ll mostly be outside. Type: Spray | Key Ingredients: Vitamin E, unique copolymer, Pro-Vitamin B5, Oribe Signature Complex | Size: 2.2-5.5 ounces OGX Renewing + Argan Oil of Morocco Weightless Healing Dry Oil Walmart Buy on Amazon Buy on Ulta Buy on Target This oil by OGX is made for all hair types, but fine hair will especially love its lightweight formula. It comes in a spray bottle that mists oil for an even application. Plus, the spray bottle aids in a mess-free application, unlike most oil-based products. We also love the sweet citrus and floral scent. One key ingredient is Moroccan argan oil, which is known to keep hair smooth, shiny, and frizz-free. The nourishing formula also prevents breakage and split ends. You can use this product to instantly tame frizz and flyaways on dry hair or prevent frizz after washing. If applying to damp hair, you’ll need to blow dry your hair to infuse the Moroccan argan oil. Since this product does not protect against heat styling, we also recommended adding this blowout spray by OGX to your routine. Type: Oil | Key Ingredients: Moroccan argan oil | Size: 4 ounces Moroccanoil Treatment Light Sephora Buy on Amazon Buy on Nordstrom Buy on Sephora The Light version of Moroccanoil’s classic product is specifically made for fine and light-colored hair. People with fine hair tend to shy away from oils, but this product is lighter in color and texture to better fit your hair type. Though lightweight, it’s formulated with argan oil and is rich in antioxidants to nourish and hydrate hair. You can buy this oil in a mini size for travel, standard size for daily use, or value size to stock up. We love that it can be used on damp hair to prevent frizz or on dry hair to tame flyaways, condition split ends, and smooth hair. It’s important to note that this pick doesn’t protect hair from heat styling, so you’ll need to add another product to your routine. We recommend the Moroccanoil Perfect Defense Heat Protectant to protect your locks. Type: Oil | Key Ingredients: Argan oil, linseed extract | Size: 0.85-3.4 ounces Best for Thick Hair Living Proof Instant De-Frizzer Amazon Buy on Amazon Buy on Sephora Buy on Target This product is so good it comes with an endorsement from not one but two Southern Living staffers, senior social media editor Brennan Long and senior digital editor Jenna Sims. "While preventative products are a great option, they sometimes come with false promises and can't stand up to the humidity of an Alabama summer! I love this de-frizzer because it helps tame frizz instantly when it (inevitably) forms," Sims raves. "It refreshes my hair and leaves it with a soft, smooth finish while preventing frizz from coming back." Most anti-humidity products are preventative and should be applied on clean, damp hair. However, Living Proof’s Instant De-Frizzer is made for dry hair and instantly calms frizz between washes. This spray is meant for medium to thick hair and can be applied all over. Your hair can be weighed down by this spray if too much product is applied, so focus on mid-lengths to ends and apply the product with your fingers to the frizz-prone hairline.Type: Spray | Key Ingredients: Amaranth seed extract, biomimetic 5-oil blend, high-gloss emollient | Size: 2.8-6.2 ounces Drybar Final Call Frizz & Static Control Mist Sephora Buy on Amazon Buy on Sephora Buy on Target Protect your blowout with Drybar’s Final Call anti-humidity mist. This spray delivers instant results and leaves your hair with a lightweight and touchable finish. You’ll benefit from up to 24 hours of frizz control and 72 hours of static control with this pick. It’s ideal for all hair types and textures, adds shine, and protects from harmful UV rays. This spray is used as the final step in your blowout process. After hair is dry and styled, spray all over to create a shield against both dry and humid climates. Though this spray protects against frizz and static, it doesn’t necessarily have any hold. Consider adding a traditional hair spray to your routine if your hair struggles to hold curl or styling. Type: Spray | Key Ingredients: Sunflower seed oil, jojoba oil, monoi oil, coconut milk, vitamin E | Size: 1.7-10 ounces Ouai Leave In Conditioner Amazon Buy on Amazon Buy on Sephora Buy on Target Hydrated hair is less likely to have frizz, so leave-in conditioner can take your hair care routine to the next level. This is a multipurpose product that detangles hair and protects against heat up to 450°F in addition to reducing frizz and flyaways. We love that it’s made without sulfates and is compatible with all hair types. Southern Living digital editor Kaitlyn Yarborough found it to be especially helpful for her thick hair. “My hair is very thick with a little bit of texture, which means it mainly acts up in the heat and humidity that takes over the south from spring through fall,” says Yarborough. “This stuff is the definition of good things come in small packages. The travel sized bottle lasts SO long and I take it on all trips.” Though it has several traits we love, it’s important to note that the North Bondi scent may not be for everyone. The floral fragrance has notes of bergamot, violet, and white musk, so keep that in mind before purchasing.Type: Leave-in conditioner | Key Ingredients: Tamarind seed extract, panthenol, vitamin E, hydrolyzed proteins | Size: 1.5-4.7 ounces Best for Curly Hair John Frieda Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Touch-Up Crème Amazon Buy on Amazon Buy on Walmart Buy on Target Fight frizz on the go with John Frieda’s Secret Weapon styling cream. This curl cream fights frizz for up to 24 hours and can be reapplied throughout the day for touch-ups. It’s formulated with avocado oil for added shine and glycerin, which Page says helps with moisture balance. Type: Cream | Key Ingredients: Avocado oil, glycerin | Size: 4 ounces Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel Amazon Buy on Amazon Buy on Ulta Buy on Target Many anti-humidity products require heat styling to see full results, but not this pick by Ouidad. This gel product provides curl definition and frizz protection without a crunchy finish. It works by sealing the hair cuticle to keep moisture in, plus it protects against harmful environmental aggressors. It’s recommended for any climate and all curl types, and it’s even safe for color-treated hair. Two of its key ingredients include sericin and wheat protein. Sericin is a protein derived from silk that helps seal your hair cuticle and reduce frizz. Wheat protein helps make your hair healthier, shiner, and more manageable. For best results, apply a nickel-sized amount of this product to damp hair and air dry or diffuse. The price per ounce is one of the highest on our list, but a little gel goes a long way. Type: Gel | Key Ingredients: Sericin, wheat protein | Size: 2.5-33.8 ounces Kenra Anti-Humidity Spray 5 Amazon Buy on Amazon Buy on Ulta Buy on Walmart If you’re looking for long-lasting protection, opt for this pick by Kenra. Its formula includes argan oil to fight frizz and create a silky finish for up to 24 hours. All hair types are compatible, but those with curly hair will love its lightweight yet nourishing finish. “I've been using this on and off since I finally started to embrace my naturally curly and coarse hair texture in late high school," says Southern Living senior travel and culture editor Tara Massouleh McCay. "It's easy-to-find in a drugstore and has always done well for last-minute styling. I just add a couple pumps to wet or damp hair and it defines my waves, while eliminating frizz. The best part is it doesn't leave my hair feeling 'crunchy' or stiff like curly hair gel products often do." We love that this product can be used on damp hair out of the shower or to refresh dry day two or three hair. Garnier rates this product’s hold 1/5 on their scale, so consider using additional curly hair products if hold and longevity are your goals. Type: Cream | Key Ingredients: Moroccan argan oil | Size: 5.1 ounces Best for Coarse Hair Bed Head TIGI After Party Super Smoothing Cream Amazon Buy on Amazon Buy on Ulta Buy on Target You’ll want to consider this pick if you’re looking for a cream that will give your hair a shiny and sleek finish. A quarter-sized amount of this product will protect hair color from UV rays as well as styling heat up to 450°F. For sun protection, it’s recommended to apply this product right before going outside. Coconut oil gives luster, shine, and makes your hair soft. This medium-hold moisturizing style cream can be used on all hair types, but it’s specifically made for medium to thick coil patterns. It’s ideal for any natural styling, wash-and-go, twist out, or rod set. It’s important to note that it’s currently only available in one size, so there’s not a travel size to try out before purchasing the large product. Type: Cream | Key Ingredients: Coconut oil | Size: 8.5 ounces Pattern Styling Cream Amazon Buy on Amazon Buy on Sephora Buy on Target This styling cream by Pattern is made specifically for curly and coily hair. This cream is free of parabens, cruelty-free, and comes in recyclable packaging. It’s available in a mini, standard, and value size to best fit your needs. In addition to fighting frizz and dryness, this multipurpose product protects from heat up to 450°F plus UV rays and the drying effects of the sun. Bumble and Bumble’s signature six-oil blend, which includes coconut, argan, grape seed, macadamia, sweet almond, and safflower, adds moisture to the hair while providing smoothing properties. Though it’s recommended for all hair types, keep in mind that fine hair may find leave-in conditioner to be heavy. Type: Leave-in conditioner | Key Ingredients: Six-oil blend (coconut, argan, grape seed, macadamia, sweet almond, and safflower) | Size: 2-8.5 ounces Tips for Choosing the Right Anti-Humidity Hair Products Hair Product Application Anti-humidity products can be split into two categories: preventative products and products to reduce current frizz. Popular preventative products include shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner, cream, and styling primer while oils and hair sprays are frequently used to reduce current frizz. Most application types are successful at preventing frizz, so it comes down to a personal preference. McDonough says she prefers creams and oils because they’re easier and have mess-free applications. She adds that hair sprays are a good option for day two or three hair. Key Ingredients Page recommends looking for products that contain silicones like dimethicone or cyclomethicone to create a protective barrier around your hair. She adds that glycerin helps with moisture balance (and can be found in John Frieda’s Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Anti-Frizz Styling Cream. “When using products with silicones or heavy creams or oils, I suggest using a detox shampoo occasionally to help prevent product buildup on the hair,” she says. “Don’t be afraid to experiment with different products to find what works best for your hair type and styling preferences.” Hair Type & Texture Compatibility It’s important to keep your hair type and texture in mind when considering anti-humidity products. McDonough says different types of hair benefit more from anti-humidity than others. If your hair doesn’t air dry straight, you’re likely a good candidate for anti-humidity products. Heavily textured hair will likely need thicker and more nourishing products to fully combat frizz. Additional Benefits In addition to keeping frizz at bay, McDonough says anti-humidity products can create a smoother texture, add shine, and make your hair more manageable. Many of the products on our list, including Ouai’s Leave In Conditioner, have nourishing properties to help make your hair soft and strong. Options like the Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil also protect against UV rays and heat styling, so you can use them as heat protectants too. Questions and Answers Do anti-humidity hair products work? “Yes, absolutely,” says Page. “Anti-humidity products can be effective in controlling frizz and maintaining your style, especially in those humid conditions. They contain ingredients that create a protective barrier that help to repel moisture and keep hair smoother.” Some anti-humidity products can also be applied to dry hair to tame flyaways and frizz instantly. How often should you wash your hair in humid weather? Page recommends washing your hair every two to three days in humid weather to help balance oil production and prevent excessive frizz. She adds that washing frequency varies based on hair type, scalp condition, and personal preferences, so it’s best to adjust your wash routine based on how your hair personally responds to humidity. What’s the fastest way to get rid of frizzy hair? “To quickly tame frizzy hair, you can use a smoothing serum or an anti-frizz product,” says Page. “Apply a small amount evenly through damp or dry hair, focusing on mid-lengths to the ends. Comb through with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to distribute the product and smoothen the hair.” Page recommends using a blow dryer with a diffuser attachment or a flat iron on low heat to further reduce frizz and create a polished look.
